Almond Milk vs. Soy Milk: The Great Debate

Soy milk and almond milk are the top two most popular dairy milk alternatives that are recommended for people with allergies, lactose intolerance, diabetes or heart diseases. They can also be used when baking or cooking savory dishes.  So which one is better for you?  I did a bit of research to help you decide.

Quick Facts
It Doesn’t Taste Like Milk: Honestly, the taste of soy milk takes some getting used to when you are used to drinking regular milk.  The consistency is a little thicker and the original tastes a little “beany”, which is why I prefer the vanilla flavor.  I don’t like to drink it alone, but it works great for me in cereals, with pancakes or with cookies.  Online reviews say that almond milk tastes sweeter and nuttier.  I haven't tried the original almond milk, but I have tried Silk Pure Vanilla Almond, which tasted like I was drinking vanilla bean ice cream.  Yummy :-)

Soy Milk is High in Protein: It’s the only one that’s comparable to cow’s milk, providing between 8 and 11 grams of protein per cup. Soy protein also has beneficial effects on cholesterol levels and may also help keep your bones strong.

Almond Milk is Lower in Calories: If you’re counting calories, almond milk tends to be quite a bit lower in calories and sugar than most of the other non-dairy milks. It also contains monounsaturated fats, which are the same heart-healthy fats found in olive oil. Almond milk is fairly low in protein.

Calories for the original and vanilla flavors of each:
  • Silk Original Soy Milk: 90 calories per serving
  • Silk Pure Almond Original: 60 calories per serving
  • Silk Vanilla: 100 calories per serving
  • Silk Pure Almond Vanilla: 90 calories per serving
  • Silk Pure Almond Unsweetened Original or Vanilla: 30 calories per serving
Nutritional benefits: Cow’s milk is a major source of calcium and vitamin D and non-dairy milks are not naturally high in these nutrients. Some brands are fortified to make them comparable to cow’s milk as a source of calcium and vitamin D. Both soy and almond milk are excellent sources of B vitamins and all essential minerals including iron, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, copper and manganese. These minerals help control your blood pressure, improve your blood oxygenation, and protect you against diseases.  One notable advantage of almond milk is that it is much higher in vitamin E and manganese, making it a more powerful drink for improvement of skin quality and protection against cancer. However, most brands of soy and almond milk contain added sugar, salt, and other things to improve the flavor (almond milk usually has more sodium than soy milk).

Diet, Light and Sugar-Free

I have been struggling with the diet, light and sugar free-ness of it all.  I have been trying to cut down on the number of calories that I have been drinking away, but I am not loving the artificial taste of my new drink choices as I have been a diehard Dr. Pepper and Coke drinker.  Don't get me wrong, Diet Dr. Pepper is good, Crystal Light packs are always in my kitchen (avoid the ones sweetened with Truvia - blah!) and I have even tried the MiO Liquid Water Enhancer, but I can't see myself knocking any of those back long term.  This week, I switched to flavored iced tea and just limited how much sugar I used when I made the pitcher.  My co-worker suggested sweetening it with honey instead, which I was planning to try when I made another one.

I went to the grocery store and was about to pick up a few more flavors of tea when I saw the Lipton Peach Apricot Iced Black Tea To Go Packets.  Someone had already done the work for me and it was only 5 calories!  Thank you!

I got home and poured the mix into a bottle of cold water, started shaking it up to mix it and paused.  Why the heck does this stuff look so grainy?!?  Oh crap, I just wasted my money.  I picked up the box again and read, "Tea takes longer to dissolve so SHAKE WELL".  Oh.  All capital letters, huh?  I never have been good at reading all of the directions, lol!!  I continued to shake it up until everything dissolved, opened it up and took a small sip.  Hmm, not bad.  I took another sip.  Then another.  Well shoot, this is actually good!  While there was a little bit of aftertaste from the artificial sweetener (it still has some, honey or not), it was MUCH better than Crystal Light because of the tea flavor itself.  Finally!  I will definitely be purchasing the Black Currant Raspberry Black Tea To Go Packets.  They also have a Lemon Iced Black Tea and Blackberry Pomegranate, Strawberry Acai and Mango Pineapple Green Teas in to go packets.

Oh yeah...that big "5 calories" you see on the box?  That is for one serving or HALF of a bottle of water.  I found that out after I continued to read the information on the box.  Would it really have been that big of a deal to just put 10 calories on the box?  And tell your buddies at Crystal Light to do the same!

Cocktail Anyone?

On Saturday,  I went on a tour of the Morgan Creek Vineyards in Harpersville with some friends.  This small family-owned winery specializes in making flavored wines from muscadines, peaches and blueberries.  We were able to see how everything is made and enjoyed a tasting as well.  P.S.  The Carlos was my favorite!  FYI - Alabama has 12 wineries!  Born and raised here and didn't even know it.  I think I will have to hit up another one because it is such a nice, relaxing way to spend an afternoon in the springtime while getting in some steps (yep, the pedometer was running).  Now that's multitasking!

Anyway, this visit made me stop and think about a few things.  I enjoy a good cocktail like anyone else when I am hanging out with friends, but I also need to be mindful of the fact that I want to win this weight loss competition that we just started.  Just how many calories are in some of our favorite drinks?  Google to the rescue!
